A Savory Sail through Savannah

November 26th, 2010 by savannahinns

My, oh My! What a way to spend the evening  tasting the best of the culinary best here in a foodies paradise, Savannah, GA. Thursday November 18th was the Taste of Savannah at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center hosted by the Tourism Leadership Council Upon entering the  venue you could feel the excitement. The stage was set for the “Swingin Medallions” to perform hits from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Fifth Dimension, Ray Charles, The Temptations, The Delfonics and Marvin Gaye. Just as we were choosing a table to sit down, a server passed by with a fabulous hors d’oeuvre. This first taste was ” Savannah Breeze Lobster and Mango Margarita”(had to eat it with a spoon) from Hyatt Regency Savannah. Wow was all we could say.  Now it was onto our first table with the “Fried Grouper Sandwich and Low Country Chowder” from Savor Savannah Catering.  Scrumptious!!! I think I was full after just tasting these 2 lucious temptations but had to go on for  more. We now were at the Vic’s on the River table with the “Low Country Lump Crab Spring Roll”,  luscious! Next we were at the River House Seafood table with a “Mini Seafood Strudel and the “Crisp Bluffton Oysters” from 45 Bistro. Again, Incredible!  “Butternut Squash Risotto” from Belford’s and “Crab Ravioli Meatballs” from Tapas by Anna was the next taste. I am truly full. BUT had to go on!! How can anyone eat all of this? “Shrimp Scampi” from Gaibaldi’s, “Lump Crab Cake” from DeSoto Grille and “Pan Seared Scallops” at Aqua Star’s table. I just could not go on. But guess what? The “French Cassoulet” from The Culinary Institute of Savannah, another favorite with me. Then the chocolate bread pudding from Boar’s Head Tavern was a to die for dessert. After that, I really was too full to thoroughly enjoy my food. I cannot even describe the rest of the Tastes. No one person should have to go through this torture we succombed to that evening. A food lover’s paradise of tastes!

“Take Me to Bed Reds”

October 26th, 2010 by savannahinns

Last Saturday evening was our monthly wine tasting  at the Azalea Inn and Gardens B&B, Savannah, Ga. Our wine purveyor, Lori, performed her usual magic by bringing all of our guests to varying regions of the globe with her knowledge of wine.  For our weekend vacation, we traveled from Napa Valley with a Pinot Noir then  to Spain with the blended LaCartuja. Next we were off to a moody Shiraz from Australia and back to Washington State’s Columbia Valley Red Devil Merlot. The not to be out done finish was back to Italy and the Rose Brachetto. All in all the paired  food was fabulous and the company outrageously delightful.

For our luxury travel evening, we began our adventure with California’s Molnar Family Poseidon’s Pinot Noir featuring notes of strawberry and cherry paired with a sweet and savory BBQ Salmon over baby greens. Our next stop was the La Cartuja Priorat from Spain which has enticing flavors of lavender, black cherry blueberry, incense and roasted minerals complimenting the creamy white bean and chorizo soup pairing. Then it was off to Australia with a Schild Estatae Barossa Shiraz  offering a racy tobacco accented cherryand black currant fruitiness finishing with  dried sage, licorce and fresh cream to be paired with the fig chipotle BBQ lamb on sweet potato mash. Next we visited the Velvet Devil Merlot from the great state of Washington hinting of bittersweet chocolate, dark cherries and sweet rose petals matched with the perfect Italian sausage and mozzerella pizza.  To culminate the evening, the rich and sweet Italian I Quaranta Le Rose Brachetto d’Acqui was served with the frozen perfection Framboise Mousse drizzled with apricot sauce and fresh raspberries.

What a blast! We enjoyed each of our guests who participated. Many stories were shared. We even toasted the newly weds from the Zeigler House Inn. Most everyone commented on the great week-end deal, tasting fabulous wine along with perfectly paired food. “Couldn’t ask for a better introduction to Savannah” said the four guests staying with me at the Green Palm Inn.

Wine and Food Pairing: Blondes DO have more fun!

June 20th, 2010 by savannahinns

Last evening (June 19, 2010) a trio of innkeepers, Teresa, Diane and Jackie, hosted the first of 12 Wine and Food Pairing evenings at Azalea Inn and Gardens.  Each event will be held on the third Saturday of the month, and a lively theme will give you a hint of what is to come.  Diane Rousakis, accompanied by Lindsay Melton of United Distributors, lent her expertise to the evening showcasing five wines from her portfolio in response to “Summer Whites: Do Blondes Have More Fun?”  We took a slightly unconventional approach this evening presenting each wine individually, followed by its paired appetizer, an excellent opportunity to compare and contrast each wine and note how food combinations may change your perception.

Maso Canali Pinot Grigio was first up paired with (surprisingly) Onion Rings!  Diane gave an easy to understand lecture on the pinot grigio grape and the particular characteristics of this blending.  Everyone had the opportunity to appreciate the characteristics of the wine before sampling the onion rings, prepared by Azalea Inn and Garden’s chef, Kolin.  The delicate crunch of the rings and the bite of the onion dipped into two somewhat zesty dipping sauces were a hit!

Our second wine of the evening was the Alamos Torrontes, an Argentina wine with citrus and peach notes and hints of jasmine and herbs which made it a perfect pairing for something a bit spicy.  Jackie of the Zeigler House Inn served up spicy capicola ham rolled around goat cheese and micro-greens all topped with a three-pepper relish.

Next was the Martin Codax Albarino, an aromatic complex Spanish white wine, dry and crisp with flavors of ripe apples, peach, apricots, melon, grapefruit and lemon zest with a bright minerality, making a perfect match for Jackie’s next food  pairing.  Individual gratins of bay scallops in a white wine sauce with a golden brown crust of garlic, shallots, prosciutto and panko bread crumbs were chosen as the accompaniment to this rich and elegant wine.

California’s Central Coast was brilliantly represented by a William Hill Chardonnay paired perfectly: Crab Cakes with sweet corn and peppers with a whole seed mustard sauce (my personal favorite of the night) prepared by Diane of the Green Palm Inn.  This Chardonnay has a tropical nose with toasty oak, pear and vanilla scents.  Clean and soft on the palate, butterscotch and tropical fruit flavors married sublimely with the crab cakes and complimented the vanilla cream, buttered popcorn, lime and mineral finish of the wine.

The final wine of the evening, White Haven Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is a refreshing palate pleaser with vibrant peach, tropical fruit and grapefruit aromas with freshly-cut herb undertones.  The outstanding Shrimp Shooters with fresh Georgia wild shrimp was an inspired and unusual treat.

The evening wrapped up with a light tart filled with a ginger cream and fresh berries – and we can all thank Kolin for that good night treat!

Priceless Memories for a Three-Gal Getaway in Savannah … Close to Home

June 9th, 2008 by savannahinns

SAVANNAH Georgia (June 9, 2008) –- In a delightfully teasing way three creative Savannah bed and breakfast owners tested the fun appeal of Savannah in the off season with mini-getaways close to home, their bed and breakfast inns.

“National news stories remind us that many Americans have stopped taking 3-day getaways in places where the U.S. currency does so poorly,” shares marketing executive Sandy Traub. “I’m encouraging my Savannah hospitality clients to entice regional travelers to vacation near home, which will boost our local economy at the same time.”

Not waiting on a big Savannah event, a trio of innkeepers — Teresa Jacobson (Azalea Inn and Gardens), Diane McCray (Green Palm Inn) and Jackie Heinz (Zeigler House Inn) –- set out to remind themselves of the fresh, boundless opportunities for culture and fun in Savannah.
