The tall ships are coming to Savannah. Beginning Thursday, May 3 through Monday May 7th, 1012. For 5 days a collection on 14 sailing vessels will be in Savannah Harbor for the Tall Ships Challenge, a race between ports. This will be a unique opportunity to see historic ships and Navy vessels like the U.S. Coast Guard’s Barque Eagle and the HMS Bounty. This will be the only Southeaster stop on the tour. All of the ships will be seen on the Savannah’s River Stet and the promenade of Hutchinson Island. Some of the tall ships will be open to view or for daily excursions.
For those wanting more maritime experience a trip to the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum would be in order. The museum located in the beautiful Scarborough House gives it’s visitors an in-depth understanding of Atlantic trade history during the 18th and 19th centuries. The scale models on ships from the era are truly amazing. If you ever put together a model ship as a child you’ll be blown away by the detail of these exhibits. The Iron Clad was my personal favorite.
Plan your visit to the tall ships with Savannah Inns today.

Last Saturday evening was our monthly wine tasting at the Azalea Inn and Gardens B&B, Savannah, Ga. Our wine purveyor, Lori, performed her usual magic by bringing all of our guests to varying regions of the globe with her knowledge of wine. For our weekend vacation, we traveled from Napa Valley with a Pinot Noir then to Spain with the blended LaCartuja. Next we were off to a moody Shiraz from Australia and back to Washington State’s Columbia Valley Red Devil Merlot. The not to be out done finish was back to Italy and the Rose Brachetto. All in all the paired food was fabulous and the company outrageously delightful.
For our luxury travel evening, we began our adventure with California’s Molnar Family Poseidon’s Pinot Noir featuring notes of strawberry and cherry paired with a sweet and savory BBQ Salmon over baby greens. Our next stop was the La Cartuja Priorat from Spain which has enticing flavors of lavender, black cherry blueberry, incense and roasted minerals complimenting the creamy white bean and chorizo soup pairing. Then it was off to Australia with a Schild Estatae Barossa Shiraz offering a racy tobacco accented cherryand black currant fruitiness finishing with dried sage, licorce and fresh cream to be paired with the fig chipotle BBQ lamb on sweet potato mash. Next we visited the Velvet Devil Merlot from the great state of Washington hinting of bittersweet chocolate, dark cherries and sweet rose petals matched with the perfect Italian sausage and mozzerella pizza. To culminate the evening, the rich and sweet Italian I Quaranta Le Rose Brachetto d’Acqui was served with the frozen perfection Framboise Mousse drizzled with apricot sauce and fresh raspberries.
What a blast! We enjoyed each of our guests who participated. Many stories were shared. We even toasted the newly weds from the Zeigler House Inn. Most everyone commented on the great week-end deal, tasting fabulous wine along with perfectly paired food. “Couldn’t ask for a better introduction to Savannah” said the four guests staying with me at the Green Palm Inn.

Last night Jackie, Teresa and I went to the 10th Anniversary of the Savannah Trade and Conventions Center. What fun! You were encouraged to explore the vast building through a scavenger hunt. Stations were set up all over the center. At each station you were to find the answer to a specific question list on your card. You also were given appetizers and beverages at each one. What fun! We walked and walked and walked. Then laughed and lauged and laughed. The idea was great, the food was wonderful and the comraderie was fabulous. THENNNNNNN….

Yesterday, Sunday April 25th, I took my parents to the historic Savannah Theater for the new Gospel Jubilee. What a treat! The performances at the theater are always great and this one was no exception.
The afternoon was filled with uplifting songs both old standards and new. Huxie Scott, a local singer and performer, was amazing. Her singing alone would have been worth the price of admission but the rest of the cast was top notch as well. We sang along and clapped our way through the almost two hours of music. I honestly hated to see it end.
The Gospel Jubilee will be on Sunday’s only from 3-5:00 pm now until May 23rd. So if you are going to be in Savannah take time to see this wonderful show or any of the other performances that are available year round. You can visit their web site at http://www.savannahtheater.com/ for a list of shows and their schedules. I don’t think you’d be disappointed!

Thursday evening the very first concert to be held in the new Savannah Band Shell in
Forsyth Park was held. This amazing new venue is sure to be a major asset to all performance held outdoors in the park for years to come. The structure enhanced by colorful lighting and fountains made the concert a real pleasure to watch.
The performers were “Crooked Still”, a band that features bluegrass and Celtic music. The music was fabulous. I can’t wait for the Jazz Festival in September and Picnic in the Park in October. Concerts in the park have always been a favorite with locals and visitors alike. This new venue will only take the experience to a higher level.
During the day and when concerts have not taken the stage the fountains in front can be used as a wading pool. Next to the Band Shell there is also the new Forsyth Cafe and visitor’s center. Be sure to check it out. — Jackie Heinz,
Zeigler House Inn.

The final day of our trip was by far the roughest. We had to leave Jacksonville by 6:15 AM. Ever fearful that I would oversleep, I set the alarm for 4:45 AM (okay, I need that much time to put myself together, pack and eat for the day). Unfortunately I awoke at 4 AM, and after lying there for a few minutes just said, “Shoot,” and got up.

SAVANNAH Georgia (June 9, 2008) –- In a delightfully teasing way three creative Savannah bed and breakfast owners tested the fun appeal of Savannah in the off season with mini-getaways close to home, their bed and breakfast inns.
“National news stories remind us that many Americans have stopped taking 3-day getaways in places where the U.S. currency does so poorly,” shares marketing executive Sandy Traub. “I’m encouraging my Savannah hospitality clients to entice regional travelers to vacation near home, which will boost our local economy at the same time.”
Not waiting on a big Savannah event, a trio of innkeepers — Teresa Jacobson (Azalea Inn and Gardens), Diane McCray (Green Palm Inn) and Jackie Heinz (Zeigler House Inn) –- set out to remind themselves of the fresh, boundless opportunities for culture and fun in Savannah.

SAVANNAH Georgia (June 7, 2008) –- In a delightfully teasing way three creative Savannah bed and breakfast owners have busily stirred up curiosity around historic Savannah’s downtown, causing excitement about the excitement.
In the sunny-crazy escapades, captured by photographer Jerry Harris, the trio comes across as outdoor concierges showcasing Savannah’s great landscapes. With a sense of pure adventure, Teresa Jacobson (Azalea Inn and Gardens), Diane McCray (Green Palm Inn) and Jackie Heinz (Zeigler House Inn) danced in conga line with Marilyn Monroe in City Market, and then set out to mimic Forrest Gump in Chippewa Square and beyond.
“These individualists are not the heat seekers but they’re getting to the top of Savannah leisure, dazzling those they meet with their sweet talkin’, ,” shares marketing executive Sandy Traub. “Their guests adore them and others in the hospitality community admire their spunk!”
